What is blast cleaning ?

Blast cleaning is a common surface enhancement technique that provides an even, matte, and clean finish. It involves propelling media, such as grit or spherical metallic particles, at high velocity onto the component. These high-energy impacts create abrasion and ensure a consistent surface roughness. The abrasion removes contaminants like paint, rust, grease, oil, and carbon particles. This results in a matte finish, which is ideal for applications like coating, painting, non-destructive testing (NDT), and aesthetics. To date, blast cleaning remains the most popular technique used as a prior, intermediate, and final processing step, often involving multiple blasting stages throughout the manufacturing process.

Blast cleaning is a fast and versatile method for preparing surfaces before further processing steps like NDT, coating, or painting. The high-velocity abrasive media effectively removes tough paint residue, deep rust, heat treatment scale, and old grease. Blast cleaning replaces time-consuming and costly manual labor.

Enhanced durability

When preparing a part for coating or painting, high-velocity impacts from abrasive particles create micro-indentations on the surface. These indentations increase the surface area, improving adhesion. As a result, your coating or painting has better durability.

Improved Strength

Rust can penetrate deeply into a part, even at a microscopic level that’s invisible to the eye. Parts that have been rusted for a long time can still have residual rust beneath the surface, which can lead to fatigue cracking. Grit blasting is the only technique that effectively removes rust from the deepest layers, making it the best choice for enhancing your part’s performance.

Eco-friendly solution

Grit blasting does not use any chemical products, and the media is recirculated, leaving only dust as waste. We also use broken shot peening media in our blast cleaning processes to minimize waste. As a result, blast cleaning is an eco-friendly alternative to chemical paint strippers and other methods.

How does blast cleaning differs from shot peening ?

Blast cleaning focuses on achieving a specific surface finish, while shot peening aims to enhance a component’s resistance, such as increasing fatigue life or improving contact properties. Shot peening creates a ~100 μm deep, homogeneous layer that introduces cold working effects and compressive residual stresses. In contrast, blast cleaning only affects the top microns of the surface. Additionally, shot peening cannot use grit media because it is too light to plastically deform the surface, but blast cleaning can utilize shot peening media.

What type of materials can be blasted ?

We can blast a wide range of materials, including metals like titanium, aluminum, regular steels, stainless steel, and their alloys. Although less common, we can also blast plastic, wood, and hard elastomers. Our expertise lies in selecting the appropriate media for each material to prevent contamination, galvanic corrosion, or damage to the part.

What is the difference between sand blasting and blast cleaning ?

Both terms refer to the same process. “Sand blasting” is a more common name because it originally involved using sand propelled by air pressure in an artisanal manner. “Blast cleaning” encompasses a broader range of media and technologies for propelling various materials.
